How the waffle grid works
Each raised square is a pocket. Water runs into the recesses between them and is held there rather than spreading across a flat surface and off the edge, which is why a waffle mat takes up more than its weight suggests. The same pockets trap air when the mat is dry, and that layer of air is what stops the surface feeling cold underfoot on a tiled floor first thing in the morning.
