What the honeycomb backing does
A flat rubber sheet grips by contact alone. A honeycomb pattern adds hundreds of small open cells that create suction against smooth tile — press the mat down and it stays down, even at the corners, which is where mats usually start lifting. The open cells also let air circulate underneath, so the floor beneath the mat is not permanently damp.
